Bio

Pınar Birim (1978, İstanbul) grew up in the skateboard scene whilst also singing in a punk band called “Headache”. While studying in the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University she also designed her own band’s posters and artworks experimenting with print techniques and silk screen. After completing her BA in Communication Design and Arts, she moved to London where she attended an MA in Interactive Digital Media Art at Ravensbourne College.

During her 6 years in London she worked as a freelance designer and collaborated with artists and participated in various exhibitions. Upon returning to Istanbul Pinar worked as an art director for agencies and worked with local and international clients. Her awards include young designer of the year at the age of 29 from GMK.

She ran workshops with fine arts high school students collaborating wtih the NGO Baykuşhane traveling from Şırnak to Mardin to Alaçatı with the pupils. She has also taught “Branding and Advertising” courses in the BA Architecture and Design Department of UBT University in Pristina, Kosovo.

Her art reflects her attitude towards the country she was born into with conflicts and chaos. Her skating years were formative in shaping her approach to canvas – improvisatory, wild and chaotic, but with a distinct feel of youthful playfulness.

Pinar is a mother of two wonderful girls, Tuna and Ekin.
